TECH FEATURES: THE DELICIOUS DE ROSAS OF FLY V AUSTRALIA
March 8, 2010

"Agoura Hills, CA seems to be the new hot-spot on this side of the pond for late winter training. Access to the epic climbs of Malibu area and good weather attracted Team Fly V Australia here for their final team camp before their assault on the 2010 race season which will begin at the San Dimas stage race in a few weeks. Fresh off a great debut at Callville Bay in Las Vegas, the Fly V boys, led by Australian Ben Day and American Phil Zajicek, held a week long team camp, hosted an upscale team presentation in Beverly Hills and then finished the week leading out a public ride from one of the best bike shops in Southern California, Velo Pasadena.  For 2010, the Fly V team is made up of 15-riders with the bulk of the roster, ten in all, being from Australia. The focus of the team is to create a distinctly Australian professional cycling team that will eventually compete at the highest levels of the ProTour. With 94 wins in 2009, they seem to be well on their way......"

Gold and Silver to Fly V australia

Ballarat, Australia – David Kemp claimed second place in the 2010 Australian Championships to claim Fly V australia’s second medal of the championships to go with Aaron Kemps Gold medal won earlier in the week at the Criterium.

Fly V australia’s race plan was laid out for all to see within half a lap of today’s 16-lap 160 km road race. In a catch me if you can strategy Fly V Australia placed 3 riders into the first break of the day. 5 others joined David Kemp, Aaron Kemps and Hayden Brooks as they set about amassing a 7-minute lead. They got down to work in such a way that the lead they built up ultimately became insurmountable for the chasers.

In a well laid out plan inform riders; Bernie Sulzberger, Jonathan Cantwell, Jai Crawford and Darren Rolfe were given a ‘free’ ride in the peloton. Team DS Henk Vogels said “Having three in the move took the pressure off us and allowed us to be in a position to follow the expected moves from the PRO Tour riders.” Vogels added, “With 10 laps completed and the break with still almost 7 minutes it became evident that the chasers had a big job ahead of them, then at three laps to go and still over four minutes in front we knew the race would be decided from the break.”

Team owner Chris White added “What pleased me the most today was they way the Team yet again took the racing to the peloton and the display of excellent Team work in executing the race strategy. Also pleasing was the display of the depth of our roster where we counted on David and Hayden to fight for the win. Ultimately having 3 riders finish in the top 8 ensured the score board recorded the Team’s depth.”

A just reward for his superb ride today David Kemp was granted the final position by the National Selection committee in the National Team to contest the Santos Tour Down Under (TDU) beginning in Adelaide on 17 January. David will now join Fly V australia teammate Jonathan Cantwell in the National team to contest the TDU.

David Kemp said of today’s race, “The team strategy was for us to be there for when Bernie and Jai rode across to the break with 50 or so km to race. Those plans changed when our lead was still more than 4 minutes with a handful of laps remaining. I gave everything I had today and when Travis Meyer (Garmin) went at the bottom of the final climb I tried to close the gap but could only hold it at around 20 seconds from there to the finish.” Kemp went on to say, “Today’s result gives me great confidence as I head into our 2010 international race program that will include Asia, USA and the UK.”

. Team Owner Chris White said the team was built to accommodate a deep racing program that will see Fly V Australia competing firstly in Australia and then the United States for much of the year. White added, “On our way to the US in February we will be competing in India and Singapore and later in the year we hope to be granted starts in the Tour of Ireland and Britain.”

“Our vision is to be part of the PRO Tour and we have made significant steps towards our objective. Australia is the third ranked Nation in cycling and does not have a PRO Tour team, this needs to be addressed and over the next two years we intend to build to this level. In Europe cycling is a historical sport and 7-eleven was North America’s cycling frontier back in the 70’s, it’s time for an Australian PRO tour team.” White said.

Building on a successful 2009, 10 of the 15 riders in the 2010 roster are returning, including general classification contenders Phil Zajicek, Ben Day and Bernie Sulzberger and all rounder Jonathan Cantwell, one day hitter Charles Dionne and criterium specialist Ben Kersten. In a performance that defined the Team’s 2009 program Zajicek scored a gutsy stage win ahead of Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer at the SRAM Tour of the Gila in the United States in April while Day is a past silver medalist at the Commonwealth Games who won the San Dimas (Calif.) Stage Race in March. Sulzberger is the defending Australian criterium champion who showed his versatility when he captured the overall at this year’s Tour of Tasmania.

Cantwell, a prolific winner in 2009 was also third overall at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour behind Bradley Wiggins thus showing that he is capable of more than just fast finishes. Kersten is a past junior world champion on the track and Commonwealth Games gold medalist who won the 2009 USA Cycling Professional Criterium Championship. Dionne earned more than 20 victories in 2009, including stage wins at the Tour de Beauce, the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic and the Tour du Quebec.

Also returning are Alessandro Bazzana (super domestique), Darren Rolfe (winner of Tour of Geelong) and Hayden Brooks and David Kemp (both stage winners at the Tour of Murray River).

New additions include a pair of proven South African talents, Darren Lill (from Team Type 1) and Jay Thomson (from MTN Cycling). Lill is a past Continental road champion (2006) who won the difficult Mount Nebo climbing stage on the way to second overall at the 2009 Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah. Thomson is the reigning South African time trial champion who represented his country at the world road race championships in Mendrisio.
